New NIH Challenge Grant RFA Released !

NIH will distribute at least $200 million  and fund 200 or more grants in FYs 2009 - 2010 through the NEW NIH Challenge Grants in Health and Science Research.  In addition, Recovery Act funds allocated to NIH specifically for comparative effectiveness research (CER) may be available to support additional grants. Projects receiving these funds will need to meet this definition of CER.

  • Each project will be $1 million in total costs over two years
  • No limits on number of applications per investigator or per institution
  • Application deadline April 27, 2009.  12-page limit per application.
  • New review & scoring criteria will be used in this competition.

The new grants will support research on specific Challenge Areas (click link for detail) in biomedical, behavioral or public health research that will benefit from significant 2-year jumpstart funds to quickly advance the area in significant ways . Within those areas, the NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices have specified particular Challenge Topics  that address their missions and will be given highest priority. The research in these areas should have a high impact in biomedical or behavioral science and/or public health.

In addition, Institutes and Centers have identified additional Challenge Topics for funding under this FOA. A compilation of all Challenge Topics can be accessed in a single Omnibus by clicking on the Omnibus Topics Link

  1. Notice from NIH suggests that if you plan to write a challenge grant relevant to the NIA/BSR Program emphasis, it would be helpful to let your Program Officer know and you may with to include a letter requesting assignment to NIA.

  2. It seems that WSU researchers are involved in a number of the challenge areas.

  3. This link is probably important for faculty contemplating responses to NIH federal stimulus funds. Washington Post - Stimulus Applications Could Overwhelm Grants.gov http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2009/03/11/stimulus_applications_could_ov.html?hpid=topnews
